What is academic coaching?

Academic coaching, also known as Executive Function (EF) coaching, focuses on empowering students and parents to develop essential skills for academic and personal success. EF coaching primarily centres on the development of habits that include setting deadlines, breaking assignments into manageable parts, using timers, and maintaining communication with teachers. These habits enhance lifelong skills, and the approach is particularly valuable for secondary school, and university students who may face academic challenges during crucial growth phases.

EF coaching assesses and improves executive functions, which are vital brain processes for planning, initiating tasks, maintaining focus, and controlling impulses. These skills come from the frontal lobe, and are essential for academic readiness and lifelong achievement. EF skills impact various facets of life, including job success and mental health. Studies have found that strong EF skills are more critical for school readiness and future math and reading competence than IQ.

EF coaching involves creating a tailored alliance to enhance a student’s self-management and organisational skills. It is not tutoring focused on specific content or enforcing homework completion but, rather, skill development that can be applied across subjects. The coaching relationship can reduce in frequency or be phased out as students develop greater independence.

Ultimately, EF coaching can empower students and enhance their quality of life by teaching skills that are vital for academic and personal success.
